Term 3

Welcome back to Term 3!
We have a very busy term ahead. Please check below for key events happening this term. I would like to mention how impressed I have been with the dedication the children of Room 28 have shown towards their homework and Typing Club, both last term and this term. I encourage you to continue to allow your child to access a computer/laptop at home to use Typing Club regularly.

Merit Certificates
Jaedyn, Ava, Milla and Maria-Bella have been doing an incredible job in Room 28 and are very deserving of their merit certificates. Congratulations, I am so proud of you!
Fantastic efforts, Ava, for the hard work you have put in to improving your Principal's Challenge results last term! Keep it up :)

Term 2

Hi everyone,

I can't believe we are already half way through the year! Time sure does fly when you're having fun. We have achieved so much already this year and I hope you are as proud as I am.
Here's what's been happening...

Constable Care Incursion

In Week 6, Students attended a Constable Care incursion. They went on a wild ride in Professor Tells-You-Stuff's terrific tambourine time machine to explore the ways we can travel to school safely! The children learned all about walking, riding a bike or scooter and travelling in the car safely.

RAC Incursion
In Week 7, students attended an RAC incursion. Students became ‘crash scene investigators’ to understand bike, pedestrian and passenger safety. They listened to the emergency call to 000, listened to witnesses' accounts of what happened, and looked for clues that might help solve the mystery. These were their findings:
1. The bike rider was racing another person on a skateboard so they were going too fast and not paying attention.
2. The person walking the dog was crossing on a corner so they didn't see the bike rider. They were also wearing dark clothes, which made the difficult to see at night!
3. The person who was getting out of the car got out on the traffic side, had her headphones in and was watching something on her phone. She opened the car door and the cyclist had to swerve out of the way.

Super Scientist Presentations
In Week 7, students presented their Super Scientist experiments. The effort that went into these presentations was impressive and the audience asked fantastic inquiry questions following each experiment.

A HUGE congratulations to our class finalists, Milla and Eddie, who presented their experiment again to all the Year 2 students and teachers again in Week 8.

Merit Certificates
Congratulations to Dhwaj, Levi, Kabilan and Ty for receiving a Merit Certificate at the Junior Assembly in Week 7. These students have been working tirelessly this term and should be very proud of themselves. Keep up the great work! Congratulations to Jaedyn, who was recognised by Miss Oliver for his wonderful efforts in Sport this term.

Thank you for all your support so far this year. I wish you all a safe, relaxing and fun-filled break!

ICT Skills

Our class has been working hard on our Computer Skills in the classroom and in the computer lab with Mr Meacham. This includes using the various functions in Microsoft Word, coding BlueBots and touch typing.

BlueBot dance competition!

As previously mentioned, the children of Room 28 are learning to touch type this year. Whilst I am aware that some parents would prefer not to let their child on the home computer/laptop, I encourage you to do so, as it is vital that they get as much practice as possible. Not only is it a valuable life skill, but Year 3 students next year will be typing up their NAPLAN writing pieces. Touch typing and general familiarisation with the keyboard will be highly beneficial.

Congratulations to Asha, Amber and Kaden who received Merit Certificates at the last Junior Assembly. These students have been working very hard and have been showing lots of kindness and respect. You are AMAZING!

Parent Information Night

Thank you to all the parents who were able to come to Room 28's Parent Information Night. If you have any further questions or were unable to attend, please don’t hesitate to come and speak with me. I have attached a link to the information presented.

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1gZtSkGz_lsix4yfwy4praV3KwniJ4HwMYLl5nLHeOAM/edit

The below information was explained at the Parent Information Night, however I would like to reiterate it again and for those who were unable to attend.

Allergies
We have a child in our class with a serious peanut allergy. Please do not pack your child’s lunch with nuts, nut bars or peanut butter.

Birthdays
Please do not feel obliged to bring in a treat for the class on your child’s birthday. It is NOT an expectation. However if you would like to, please refrain from bringing in a whole cake that needs to be cut up or anything that must be refrigerated.

All About Me Presentations

In Week 4, students participated in the Speaking and Listening task 'All About Me'. They gave a short presentation to the class with a focus on using appropriate body language and a loud clear voice.
Everyone did a fantastic job and it was so lovely to get to know the students even better!

Welcome to Room 28

Term 1
During these first few weeks of the term, I have been very pleased with the effort made by the children to transition smoothly back into school and classroom routines. It has been wonderful to see the students of Room 28 already showing initiative and independence in our classroom.
Congratulations to Maria-Bella and Jye who have been elected as our Student Councillors. I'm sure you will both do a fantastic job representing our class this semester.
Jye and Maria-Bella accepting the Energy Conservation Award on behalf of Room 28!

Assembly
A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to all students from Room 28 and Room 30 for hosting the first Junior Assembly for 2019 last Friday. The students worked very hard for a week and a half leading up to it, including learning their speaking parts, remembering songs and actions and completing poems for the WOW Writing Boards. Thank you to parents and families who were able to attend and also to those who helped their children to remember their lines. The students worked tirelessly and Miss Wright and myself were so proud of the way they conducted themselves and performed.
Happy little vegemite's from Room 28 and Room 30
I would also like to acknowledge Shanuel, Aelah and Laura for receiving Merit Certificates. Milla was awarded the Values Award of Respect and Patience and Eddie was presented with Room 28's Science Award.
Congratulations Shanuel, Aelah and Laura on your well-deserved Merit Certificates!
Fantastic work Eddie and Milla, I am so proud of you!

Parent Information Evening

Apologies again for having to postpone parent information night last week. I will endeavour to reschedule it for next week (Week 5) and will notify you as soon as a time and day have been confirmed.

Homework
Homework will be commencing this week and our homework changeover day will be Thursdays. I have run through the expectations of homework with the children, however, if you or your child have any queries please do not hesitate to ask. Please ensure you are checking your child's homework folder regularly for any written communication from the school or myself.

Practice Time (20 minutes)
Reading - home reading
Spelling - phonic/sight words list
Numeracy - basic number facts/tables
Numeracy - word problems

  • Homework is to be managed by the student.
  • The same work standards are expected - writing in pencil, neat handwriting and neat ruling up.
  • Students must bring their homework into school every morning for checking and signing.
  • Above all else, reading should be made a priority. Work with your child on fluency, expression and comprehension.

Studyladder
Studyladder will be used at school during the year to support the children's learning. I have given the children access to their own Studyladder accounts for additional home practice. I will add tasks to be completed at home if they wish.
Please see the inside cover of your child's homework book for login details.

TypingClub

This year, the children of Room 28 are learning to touch type. TypingClub teaches children to use the correct finger positioning and the children have been thoroughly enjoying this part of the day. I encourage children to use the typing program at home when possible, but it is imperative that they are using the correct finger positioning and not defaulting back to using their two index fingers. Whilst I am aware that some parents would prefer not to let their child on the home computer/laptop, I encourage you to do so as it is vital that they get as much practice as possible. I will be teaching them how to find the website, how to log in and how to use a computer responsibly at school, which will make this process easier for you at home.
Please see the inside cover of your child's homework book for login details.

Parent Survey
A Parent Survey will be sent home with your child this week. Please take the time to complete and return this to me by Tuesday of next week (Week 5). The more information, the better!
